Restoration - Basic Instinct
Basic Instinct
Basic Instinct They may not be as glamorous as chrome headers, but these basic parts are essential if you’re serious about adding muscle to your classic vehicle.

Anyone who has watched the Barrett-Jackson Auction lately knows that the cost of classic American muscle cars has blown through the roof. The prices for the old Hemi ’Cudas or Superbirds have placed them beyond the reach of most mortals.

But what if you still crave the thrills that only Detroit in its heyday could provide? There’s still hope for you, my friend, thanks to the continuing introduction of Mopar restoration parts. For example, a number of popular suspension parts, driveline components and fuel system parts are now available for Chrysler A, B and E-body muscle cars.

David Hakim, Mopar Restoration Parts Program, said the spiraling prices for collector muscle cars is also heating up the market for all kinds of older Chrysler vehicles. Hakim explained, “With the value of the old Hemi cars and other similar models going up, it also makes other models of that era more desirable as well. People who may have a Slant-Six in their car can take a Mopar crate Hemi engine and produce something really exciting.”

He continued, “There’s a huge market out there of regular guys who may drive 340 Dusters or Six-Pack Challengers that are looking to beef up the performance to rival the more expensive and powerful muscle cars. It’s up to us at Mopar to provide these people with high quality parts at competitive prices.”

That’s why Mopar has made a push recently to get these suspension and driveline parts into owners’ hands as soon as possible. Hakim said, “These may not be the most glamorous or exotic restoration parts, but they’re critical for owners who want to increase the performance and handling of their classic Chrysler. In other words, these parts will just make it more fun to drive.”

New Muscle for Older Vehicles

To help bring back that performance car feel, Mopar now has XHD Rear Leaf Springs for both the right and left side (P4510268/P4510269). These fit 1964–1975 Abody vehicles such as the Dart, Demon, Duster, Valiant and Barracuda (1969 and earlier).

The new Aluminum Billet Yoke Packages (P4510638) fit all 8 3/4" axles with 10 spline axles (for the 1.078" and 1.125" bearing caps), making them the perfect components for street and restoration applications.

In addition, Mopar makes a Chromoly 4130 Billet Yoke Package (P4510656) that also fits these axles and can stand up to severe duty or drag race applications. To further prepare your car for the strip, you’ll also want the Mopar axle brace, which fits all 8 3/4" axles in A, B and E-body vehicles.

And if you’re going to go, don’t forget about stopping. The Mopar Adjustable Brake Pushrod (P4510640) should be used with MPP lightweight master cylinders when updating the master cylinder and brake system on older Chrysler vehicles.

At the same time, be sure to include a Heat Shield (P4510634) for the brake master cylinder. This will block engine compartment heat from the brake master cylinder and help prevent the brake fluid from boiling, which can lead to brake fade.

Moving on to the fuel system, many performance-minded Mopar lovers update their crate motors with Mopar M1 single-plane intake manifolds for improved throttle response and torque. When doing so, be sure to add Mopar's Throttle Return Spring Bracket (P4510646) which is desingned for use with the M1.

Keeping the Classic Car Enthusiasts Happy

These are just a few of the current offerings from Mopar to help collectors boost their vehicles’ performance. Hakim pointed out that keeping the older vehicles in shape can translate into more sales for the newer DaimlerChrysler products.

He said, “These enthusiasts are the best brand ambassadors we have at DaimlerChrysler. They buy new Dodge Rams to tow their cars or Jeep vehicles for their families to drive. They are also very influential in affecting the decisions of friends and family to purchase DaimlerChrysler vehicles.”

Hakim continued, “That’s why we want to do everything we can to ensure we provide quality products for our muscle car enthusiasts. We have the same passion as the owners do to make sure we offer the best in parts and service."
